Volunteers who have Dutch costumes are welcome tparticipate in the Volksparade as part of the Dutch Heritage Walk. Reminiscent of 19th century street vendors in the Netherlands, this interactive and colorful part of the parade features vendor carts for produce, baked goods, fish, sewing goods, and flowers. There are also bicyclists, a common form of transportation in the flat Netherlands, women selling flowers, cheese carriers, and former Tulip Courts. The Dutch Heritage Boosters provide the flower baskets and carts. Please meet at Tulip Town Bulb Company at the beginning of each parade.
HISTORY OF TULIP FESTIVAL
By the 1930’s the community of Orange City was well established and a second generation had grown and retired. As the European homeland seemed further from reality, a movement started to begin a celebration to honor the traditions and customs of their Dutch ancestors. The Dutch innate tendency toward cleanliness and beauty combined with a historical background of the flower culture was the inspiration for the Tulip Festival. In 1936 the Tulip Festival officially began.
